So let's break down what happened here: Popular gaming influencer postpones his podcast because he heard some rumors that would make the episode more interesting. He waited it out in hopes the news comes out. Greg tried to downplay the news in an earlier stream in an attempt to calm down the Internet. So far, it has not. A 28-page thread on ResetEra ensues with wild speculation, going through all the usual narratives (Sony and Konami, studio acquisitions, new game reveals, and so on). Folks in the gaming media space took advantage of this hysteria by making facetious statements claiming "big news" was coming, further elevating the speculations into even more absurd heights. Now, resentment and bitterness remains in the aftermath now that it is Thursday and there's minimal likelihood that anything notable from Sony will come out now that it's the end of their fiscal year.

So, what did we learn? Rumors are not truth. Those who claim they've heard something should not be taken as gospel. We should not feel "betrayed" over something that was never guaranteed that hasn't shown up yet. There's still a possibility we could receive interesting PlayStation news *next* week (that may sound risible, but there's nothing preventing Sony from dropping news anytime they want). We should probably put less value in "news" in general and just take it for what it is at face value. If we hear nothing, it's not the end of the world. It's going to be a fun year for gaming regardless if something happens in a specific way or not. Relax. Play video games.

That's fine. The people getting angry, implying he was wrong or saying he needs to hide from the internet? That's different.
I don't think you meant me, but just to be clear about this. I am not angry at Gregg and I hope he doesn't get insulated or abused over this. I am just not having the "Gregg has nothing to do with this week's speculation" aguments, because he absolutely has. If he just mentioned Spartacus the speculations about what the other rumors could be, would've never came up. That's just a fact.

Wrong about it being a very interesting week for PlayStation.

I'd say Spartacus, Everbodys Golf shutting down and a new Horror IP from Sony makes for a pretty interesting Playstation podcasting week.

Yeah, probably not.

I don't really think the EG server closure and Firesprite adding the word "horror" to a job posting were the other two rumors Greg was talking about, haha.

For real. This thread is embarrassing.
We should close Era for a few days. We collectively deserve a timeout for allowing this stupid thread to go on this long.

And new Plus/Now merger was announced. Which WAS big news for a Playstation podcast and justified his delaying.

Greg loves Everybody's Golf so it might be! I mean I doubt it is too, but then they did headline yesterday's show with the news:

Exactly.

I don't understand this narrative that nothing happened for Sony this week. What? lol. They announced their biggest service transformation in a long, long time. People gotta get their hype in check. Did they expect God of War 2, Sony buying Konami, and the FF9 remake all on top of PS Plus/Now this week? lol

Ding ding ding.

The only thing that we *knew* was happening was Spartacus, which is why I tweeted as such the morning of the announcement, and why we reported at VGC that we'd heard the news was imminent. The other two are that, rumours. Generally, if a journo doesn't report something they either:
1. Can't get a second source
2. Chased it and it was nothing.

If it's a faceless leaker on Twitter that has never reported anything of substance, or shotgun blasts 40 things and gets one right, please ignore and move on.

And never take me tweeting about Haze 4K seriously, we can only dream.

Spartacus is big news but I think Greg already covered it when news came out. He said there were "three rumors" that prompted the delay, which he described made it a "very interesting week" for PlayStation. None of those rumors have to be verifiably true, but he heard them and thought it was legitimate enough to push it back in hopes they get revealed this week. It appears that has not happened yet and so there's an army of angry posters demanding the "news".

It's almost like gamers should not let their imaginations run wild and then get let down when something that wasn't promised doesn't live up to their expectations.

If he just mentioned Spartacus the speculations about what the other rumors could be, would've never came up. That's just a fact.

He didn't guarantee 3 things were coming this week. We all knew PS+ news was coming He heard two other "very interesting" rumors (one first hand one not), related to Playstation that "MIGHT" happen this week. He tweets that they are delaying the podcast because "IF EVEN ONE" of those rumors happens they'll want to talk about it later in the week instead before the news is likely to drop.

THAT'S IT. His tweet was obviously the reason the speculation happened but he didn't guarantee anything was happening this week so it's dumb to get mad at him for mentioning the other rumors he heard. If you're annoyed there wasn't more news this week or that you feel you were promised news that's on you and the fake twitter insider accounts trying to ride on the coat tails of someone else.

We'll probably hear something like Dreams is coming to PC in a month and he'll be like "That's what I was talking about" and it will still have totally lined up with what he said about their very PlayStation specific podcast.

  • #1,426
It's pretty easy to see why people got excited based on his first tweet with that gif attached to it. It gave the impression that there was going to be some pretty big news. All we got was a pretty weak Spartacus confirmation lacking the actual important aspects of the service. And it was already reported on..

Maybe Grubb will give some insight on what those other two rumours were...

Just an in-show joke from very early on, where they said they had a certain amount of news items and joked off the cuff that it was a "bakers dozen".

Same with their "mom and grop shop" line they do. Just something Greg said accidentally years ago. The community enjoys it.

It's just an inside joke back from when it was Podcast Beyond on IGN with Greg and Colin. Whenever they go over the news and someone mentions how much news they have to cover Greg will refer to it as a bakers dozen regardless of the number of actual news items they have to go over.

Let's just please close this thread after whatever comes from Grubsnax
No, I imagine he's seen this thread and will at some point during the podcast be like:

"Blessing, before we hear from UpStart, let me take a second to address the elephant in the room. Okay Resetera, put down your pitchforks you bunch of chucklefucks! We've established how much it sucks when we film our little podcast and then immediately after upload, Sony makes a boneheaded decision or gives a goldmine of a talking point. I was trying to err on the side of caution this week, knowing that Spartacus would be coming in hot and IF that happened this week along with any of the other nuggets of information that have been floating around certain circles, I wanted to make sure we gave that room to breathe, and allowed the best friends to submit their questions and criticisms as topics of discussion.

But considering how the internet likes to hype themselves into a tizzy every time there's a State of Play announced or a new trademark submitted, I should have anticipated that some of you would put all your hopes and dreams on the shoulders of one Greg Miller: Trending Gamer, CEO of Kinda Funny, beater in foot races of the Hispanic Heartthrob, Anthony Cortez. That's on me, but we need to focus on the real tragedies this week— EVERYBODY'S GOLF!!

(At this point, he may lose his shit or make his face purple laughing at a joke he thought of but couldn't voice in time, derailing the podcast for 7 minutes)

Mizzou, Egon Spengler, back to you Blessing."

This is incredible.

Speaking of Grubbsnax, I will once again throw props to Grubb for nailing every single aspect of the Spartacus announcement over a month ago.

The name of all three tiers, the prices and exactly what was in each tier. It was all bang on.

I was excited for 'an interesting week' where Sony would announce what classic games would be bundled in with Premium but in the end they didn't announce anything that we didn't already know in Feb. Kind of a meh announcement in the end other than Sony acknowledging that the new service exists.

I just said Greg mentioning three rumors unecessarily lead to all the speculations. That's it.
